From “potentiality” to “reality” for the nutritional future in the DRC

The Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences in Kimwenza

“We support young people in finding innovative solutions to nutrition issues.” This is how Jean Mboma, Jesuit and Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences in the Democratic Republic of Congo, describes an important aspect of the objectives of this higher education institution. The faculty was recognized in 2016 by the Congolese government as part of a Jesuit-led university project, the Loyola University of Congo. In addition to the FSAV, it integrates existing university centres, in particular the Faculty of Philosophy Saint Pierre Canisius, as also institutions offering degrees in social sciences, management and business administration sciences.

Jean Mboma, trained at the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences of the Université Laval, in Quebec City, offers young Congolese a path that invites them to be creative in responding to their country’s agricultural and environmental challenges. The programme involves a large part of practical activities.

In this context, a sustainable development research centre, CERED, is taking advantage of large areas of land in Mongata, some 165 km from Kinshasa. Ghislain Tshikendwa, another Jesuit specialized in agricultural sciences as well as in communications, is responsible for this part of the formation project, which is clearly linked to the apostolic preferences of the Society of Jesus. CERED is specifically interested in opening a promising future for young people by stimulating their interest in entrepreneurship. We met for you these two Jesuits involved in the FSAV.
